I knew a young woman about 15 years ago who was a Messianic Jew and had an arranged marriage with only chaperoned dates and some very chaste kissing prior to marriage, her brother was head of their household (and therefore had arranged her marriage) because her father had died, I think, but she didn't seem to dress any differently or otherwise follow any obvious physical restrictions. Is there an Orthodox Messianic sect? I never knew any other Messianic Jews and I was under the impression all Messianic Jews followed those customs, but I realize now that she was probably not the norm.

Oh! I didn't even see the date on the first post. I read the discussion in the thread you're referring to, but I didn't get around to asking my orthodox question. I mean my question about orthodoxy. My question itself was also rather orthodox, I suppose. LOL

I have Jewish Orthodox relatives and have NEVER heard of arranged marriages and chaperoned dating or any of the very unhealthy seeming things you witnessed, Rachel. Definitely NOT indicative of Messianic nor Jewish families IME. Sounds scary and like one man's idea of a good excuse for being a control freak! :pop:
